Activity Assistant

We provide a range of activities each Monday and Thursday afternoon for our older members, including musical entertainment, Arts & Crafts, bowls, talks and quizzes. Activity Assistants will help set up and clear away activities, help members participate in activities or perhaps be asked to lead activities. Each volunteer session will last approx 2.5 hours.

Wednesday afternoon volunteers help visually impaired members play cards.

Sight loss often causes isolation and a feeling of low self worth, especially among the elderly. Befriending volunteers become the ‘eyes’ of the people they help encouraging them to maintain their independence and regain their zest for life.

Befrienders visit clients in their own homes and chat to provide companionship, in addition to reading aloud confidential mail or newspapers. Clients are vulnerable and enhanced checks will be carried out before placement of volunteer Befrienders.

People with good listening skills who are patient, non-judgemental and able to keep confidences are ideal for Befriending roles. The hours required are variable according to the needs of the client, but are preferred during the day time rather than in an evening.

Minibus Escort

Bournemouth Blind Society uses its minibus to collect/return members between their homes and the Centre in Moordown. An Escort rides with the driver to assist members on and off the bus, including handling wheelchairs, using the passenger lift and accompanying members from/to their front doors. Escorts may be asked to assist on members’ day trips away from the Centre and may be invited to help on occasional longer trips on Fridays or Saturdays.

Escorts are provided with a hi-vis vest. Escort opportunities exist Monday through to Thursday for approximately 2 hour time slots in the morning or afternoon.

Resource Centre Technician

Our Sight and Hearing Resource Centres allow people to ‘try out’ equipment to help them in their daily living. Volunteers will be asked to provide demonstrations and possibly help to set up equipment in people’s homes. The Resource Centres are open Monday – Friday 10am – 1pm, with the Technician attending on given days during that time.

We are looking for someone who is technically capable and caring, who can work with modern technology. Own car is essential and mileage costs are paid.
